Hadleigh United F.C. Youth Under 9’s
On Sunday 8th June 2008 Hadleigh United Under 9’s took two teams to Stowmarket to play in a 5 a side tournament. The boys played some exceptional football against teams from Debenham, Stowmarket Town, Kirkley & Pakefield, Thetford and Stow Flacons. The boys really did play brilliantly and both teams just narrowly missed out on the semi finals. We would like to continue introducing further members of our current under 9’s teams with pictured from left to right (back row) twins Jordan and James Crick and (front row) Arran Tampion and Luke Brown. Jordan Crick plays in defence whilst his brother James plays either upfront or midfield. Arran Tampion and Luke Brown both play in midfield. The boys are now enjoying a well earned rest and we all look forward to the new season. We will kick off with some friendly matches late August. Dates to follow.

It may be too early to write this summer off as another innings victory for climate change, but we can only hope we have seen the worst of the weather. Three out of four Saturday home games were washed out between mid-May and early June, as well as Soul at the Bowl, the live music event due to have been held at the ground. The performance by Ian Piddingtons band (Love in the) Doghouse will now take place on Friday July 11th, and all original tickets will be valid.
The highlight for the First team so far has been the thrilling Suffolk Cup win over Lakenheath. It went right down to the last ball, which Tim Warner shoveled away for the boundary we needed. Another close game against Haverhill saw the Ellis brothers pick up nine wickets between them Kalpeshs six dismissals some consolation for falling significantly behind Nikhil in the inter-Ellis six hit league. Josh Hanley, our overseas player, has settled in well, admirably adjusting to bowling with a wet ball and having a hot drink between innings.
The 2nds have three wins and two defeats in Division 6. Dave Mann has benefited from a far more settled side than was possible last season, with a good balance of youth and experience.
The father and son combination of Ian and Tom Piddington have each scored a fifty. Tom has also chipped in well with the ball. He is only 15 and is surely a first team player in the making. Thankful for the influx of some younger bowlers into the side, Simon Gladwell has transformed himself into a more than capable spinner this season, and also scored some useful face-saving runs at Brightlingsea. The top order fell victim to the curse that seemed to afflict batsmen throughout the Two Counties league on that particular day, which included Harwich being bowled out for just 12. In the youth section games that have been possible, the Under-11s beat a very strong Bury side, while the Under-13s have lost their two matches but performed well. The next few weeks promise to be some of the busiest and most enjoyable of the season, downpours permitting. We still have a handful of re-arranged junior matches to fit in, a Suffolk Cup quarter-final against either Woodbridge or St Margarets and another tour to Kent under the new management of Ian Thoroughgood.

Trophies are awarded at the third gala for top boys and girls teams, best supported club and Top club overall plus runner up and third place.Currently hadleigh Dolphins lie in 2nd place in the second division. The summer league is designed for 8-13 year old swimmers, meaning that many competitors are representing their clubs for their first season. Visiting teams were Beccles, Leiston, Deben and Felixstowe. Team Manager, Laura salisbury was pleased with the dolphins competitive spirit, as the other teams clearly had strength in depth to bring different swimmers for round 2. Hadleigh club is a relatively small club and some swimmers need to swim up an age group for the team. The coaching team led by Kern Death have been focussing the junior squad on their starts, turns and finishes and this improvement was evident amongst many of the squad.
First places went to; Georgia Howard aged 11 in 50m free, Colette Bunce aged 12 in the 50m Fly, Ben Olive aged 11 years in 50m Back and Fiona manthorpe aged 13 in 100m free . 8 personal best times were recorded. Our relay squads competed well with the 10/11 years boys 4x50m free finishing 1st and many of our other relays finishing 2nd and 3rd earning valuable points. Our boys faired better in this round with some strong performances. WELL DONE SWIMMERS.

Beccles 1st with 217
Hadleigh 2nd with 187
Leiston 3rd with 180
Deben B 4th with 170

A Goldstar Celebration
After returning from a very successful tour to Holland over Easter 1983, the then Hadleigh United U16’s football side were given the opportunity to enter the Ipswich Sunday Football League. This was accepted by a majority of the players, and so it was that Hadleigh Goldstar Athletic F.C. was eventually formed. In 1987 after playing in the league as Hadleigh United Old Boys, the team moved from the Millfield to make way for more youth teams, and began life as Hadleigh Goldstar Athletic F. C. playing their home games up at the High School.
Sunday 18th May a “21 Years of Goldstar“ Celebration Event was held at the original venue by kind permission of Hadleigh United F.C. On a pitch superbly prepared by Martin Hawes ( former Goldstar manager) and Alan Tilbury, forty plus players both past and present took part in two matches of 30 mins. each way. The first match, a mixture of young and old, was won by the “A” side 4-2, with Ian Whymark and Kevin Chisnall suggesting that one never looses the passion for the game. The “ Match of the Day” was between members of the team of 21 yrs ago and the present team, who have both won the League Junior Cup. Damien Wade, the youngest player on view, puting the present team 2 goals ahead. The Old Boys retrieved the situation with a penalty from Andrew Crisp, almost the oldest player on view, and an equaliser from Chris Smith who had provided fresh legs to help. A thoroughly entertaining mornings football bringing down the curtain on another successful season for the club. Having won the League Junior Cup, and finishing Division 3RM Runners-up. Only loosing one game all season. The morning was marred by the unfortunate Robbie Davies snapping his Achilles tendon, luckily “Medic Merv” had recovered from his stint in goal from the previous match to administer treatment before Robbie was taken to Hospital. Between the matches, Chairman Crisp made a surprise presentation of a framed certificate “Biffin” Ward in recognition of his continued support of all age groups of the local football scene, over the past 70 years.
After a quick wash and brush up the event moved on to the splendid setting at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club Hotel, where 80 members and their partners assembled for a celebration meal and presentation afternoon. Following a splendid meal the clubs resident comedian Scottie Miller introduced proceedings. Gary Hayward, who joined Richard Crisp 25yrs ago to run the club, gave a informative resume of the past 21yrs. A reply from the floor was given by Neal Bolton (past players), David Spraggons (present players) and Kevin Sheldrake (present Manager). Chairman Crisp followed on by introducing Ray Tatum the referee for the mornings events as the main guest. He went on to thank Gary for his backing over the years, along with Club Secretary Keith Sheldrake who has also been with the club 17yrs, and everyone who has been involved with the club. Stating that behind every success there is always a good woman and in this case it was his wife Myrtle. At this point there was a instant standing ovation for her lead by the older players who had often turned to her for advice in the past. After an emotional speech with a splattering of jokes involving local football fraternity the Chairman moved on to the presentation of FA Volunteer Awards. Ray presented framed certificates to Robbie Cracknell, and David “Jack” Warner, in recognition of their services when the club has been without an official. Ray giving a short ending speech praising the way the club has been run, and stating how a number of officials express their pleasure officiating at our home matches.
Scottie Miller gave 10mins of professional entertainment before the magnificent cake replica of the club badge was ceremoniously cut by Keith and his wife Janet. Thanks Kim for making and donating such a wonderful cake. With the formalities over many of the players spent time reminiscing over a few drinks, carrying on at other establishments until the early hours.
A great end to a successful season and “21 years of Goldstar.”
